Bathroom Redo-Before AND After

Its no suprise by now that I totally love shabby chich/cottage/beachy bathrooms so when it came time to update our hall bath a while back I couldn't wait to get started as I already had a plan as to how I wanted it done.

However, first things first, we needed to decide on a paint type and paint color. After researching and looking around, we decided to go with Behr Ultra Premium Satin paint in Sparkling Spring.

Now, I want you to know that not only do I {LOVE} this color, but it also goes well with the oak cabinets and trim that we have. .....Yes, I live with a man who likes the oak cabinets and trim so unfortunately they are staying and I had to work around them, but we got lucky and it just so happened that we both liked this color and it went great with the wood trim so all is good. (I prefer white mouldings and trim but for now we're leaving the trim as is since the bathroom is rarely used and the trim is in great shape.)

So, now that we have the color, it is time to paint and accessorize. My favorite parts! :)

I was aiming for a beachy/glam/cottagey look so I wanted a lot of white around the room and I wanted the decor in earth tones and natural fibers like baskets, sisal, jute, etc. with pops of silver for some sparkle and bling.

We have a sky light that lets in natural light so I wanted to keep things fresh and clean looking in this room.

For starters I made sure all of my larger spaces were white to keep the cottagey feel in the room, so I  added white rugs and a white shower curtain. The shower curtain is kind of a shear material and has tone on tone white ribbon going down it vertically like stripes. Just enough interest without stealing the show. I decided against a patterned shower curatin because I wanted my beachy accessories to be the focal points versus the shower curtain.

(see the tone on tone ribbon stripes?)
Next comes the permanent fixtures. We already had a a silver faucet, silver light fixture, and silver hardware on the cabinets.

As you can see, our cabinet hardware is slver with white handles and I think it goes with the cottagey feel of the bathroom so we're leaving it for now.

I picked out this shower curtain rod from Target. Its a tension rod and its polished chrome/silver. I really like the design around the tension cup.

As you can see the shower curtain hooks are silver S style hooks with a glass knob....they resemble the old antique glass knobs you would see on a piece of furniture. Tres shabby chic!

so I added silver in other places throughout the room such as a silver shower curtain rod, silver curtain hooks with glass knobs, and a silver candle holder to keep the look cohesive and flowing around the room.
All the silver and glass add sparkle and bling to the room for the "glam" feel.
Then I used basekts, wreaths, and shells all around the room to kind of tone down the cooler tones of the blue walls and shiney silver accessories....the natural elements kind tone down the cooler tones by warmig up the room a bit with their earth tone color and textures.

Here is the beachy distressed basket I found on sale for dirt cheap at Kohls a while back. It fit perfectly beside la toilet and is being used as a trash can.
Here is a basket I found on clearance at Pier One that was the PERFECT size for holding some extra towels. The basket adds texture to the room and the towels soften it up so its not too harsh. The wooden handles, which you will see in the final photo also add interest and give the basket a little more substance versus just a plan basket.

I chose to put a wreath above the toilet to add texture and a color contrast and I also like the fact taht the wreat does not purtrude out and take a lot of space like a shelf or cabinet would. Here is a picture of the wreath I have above the toilet. (I have had this wreath for about 5 years and have used this in various parts of my house but now it has a permanent home in the bathroom!)

So without any further delay...........here are the before and after pictures:

BEFORE: (boring, builder grade, and cream colored walls-BLANK CANVAS...right???)

AFTER: Pale blue walls, beachy/cottage look (yay!)

The white pitcher is new- I just got from Joss & Main. It is ceremaic with the fleur de lis emblem on front and has a distressed looking edges/details all around it. It was a steal at only $12.99...and the hydrangea is from my yard (free)!

....And the clam is a $1.99 thriftstore piece that I will eventally separate into two pieces and use as a candle holder. It was dusty and dirty and with a little soap and water it turned out to be a really unique piece.

And here is the the other side of the room with the towel holder:

And basic white terry cloth towels with blue stripes to keep it simple.

Here are just some accessories for the back of la toilet.....soon to be updated and finished...but for now this is what is there.

Last July I found this very large blue glass jug at Goodwill for around $2.99 and it adds a nice pop of color to this side of the vanity. (I added some dried grasses/curly willow in it for texture.)

And this little guy came from Nell Hills in KC. I added the sand and voite with the star fish and I couldn't be happier with it. I love the old worn beach wood look with chicken wire. Its the perfect accessory for this room! ....and of course my {FAVORITE} Yankee Candle reed difuser in Sun & Sand scent. OMG it reminds me of Coppertone suntan lotion!!!  LOVE IT! :)

So there ya have it! My updated hall bathroom. We have plans to frame off the mirror and I want to finish accesorizing the back of the toilet and wall opposite the sink. I have stuff ready for Mr. Chaos to hang up whenever he has time.
But all in all, paint and accessories really pulled this room together and gave it style for not a lot of $$$.

Here's one last lookie-loo
